Sarah's new album Good but not great
, September 06, 2010
I was very pleased to hear that a new album was on the way, and waited for it to arrive with some anticipation. Unfortunately I found it was somewhat disappointing.
I think it will be very difficult for Sarah to ever have an album as good as "Surfacing". Surfacing was a fresh, bold CD that really broke Sarah into the mainstream US and European market. Every track to my ears had a different sound, with the same wonderful vocal style, that is so much her own.
I found with "Laws Of Illusion" that the voice was still there, but something was missing. Every track sounded very much alike, now do not misunderstand what I am saying here, it is a solid album and I will always be a fan. However it left me somewhat wanting.
I give it 3 stars out of 5, but it will always play second fiddle to "Surfacing" which has a solid 5 stars as far as I am concerned.
Perhaps maturity is less attractive, less exciting BUT . . .

(Lord willing and the creek don't rise) we'll all be there. Sarah's words still ring with truths and her voice, well, her voice is, as always, dead on its way to your soul. Perhaps the drama of the earlier CDs (which I admit still set me on a nostalgia tour) is gone but the blues of life experience have settled in and there is a lasting, yet, austere beauty in that. Listen to the words. You've been there or you will be there; as usual, Sarah speaks for us all.
Lasting music grows on us. Not the first time. Maybe not the eighth time. But listen once more and that ninth time might grab you and, somewhere deep in your soul, you'll say "I know, oh, I know." I have learned to trust Sarah and her music. I began this review as a 3 star . . . I stopped. I listened deep within me to the voice, to the words and, sure enough, I highlighted, deleted and, at age 61 (talk about mature), realized "I know."
That voice. I always describe Sarah as a songstress who would be making music whether we listened or not (for frame of reference I put Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Ray LaMontagne, David Gray in that same group); where has she been for 7 years? Singing and growing up. Hopefully, the same place we've been . . .
Wonderful as always

I loved Sarah from the first album. This cd however, I had to give it a chance unlike her other cd's that were GREAT right out. Sarah has changed her style but the cd has grown on me and I wish her the best. You could sing the telephone book and I will always be a devoted fan.
This CD is FANTASTIC !!!!!!

This is Sarah's best CD ever! I'm just now listening to it for the 3rd time and I just got it yesterday. I like all the songs and my favorite is Illusions of Bliss. I also like Loving You is Easy and Forgiveness. They are all good and almost all written by Sarah herself. I highly recommend this CD to all SM fans and to those who are yet to become fans.

I have a few CD's by Sarah McLachlan. I enjoy listening to her music in the evenings when all is quite. Her music is melodious, calming and simply wonderful!
